Project Key Information

The objectives of the Solomon Islands Review of the Lands Sector were to review Australian land sector engagement in the Solomon Islands and determine opportunities to improve economic growth, peace and stability.

Our team developed a Land Sector Report that identified future options for Australian assistance to the land sector in the Solomon Islands. Possible areas identified for assistance encompassed support for training and capacity building, options for strengthening recognition of customary rights and activities to support dispute resolution measures.

To develop the report we drew on a wide range of views on land tenure issues including consulting with the following stakeholders:

  • Solomon Islands Institutional Strengthening of Land Administration Project (SIISLAP) team members; and
  • Australian High Commission, DFAT (formerly AusAID) and Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) staff
  • Representatives of community and civil society groups (Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Community Based organisations (CBOs))
  • Representatives of national and provincial governments
  • Private sector organisations (in particular the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce, other commercial, mining and forestry interests, and finance providers)
  • Representatives of legal institutions/groups
  • Women and youth representatives; and
  • other donor representatives

Discussions were undertaken via a series of roundtables and individual meetings, held during field visits to Malaita, Central Province and Guadalcanal.

The team provided a debriefing and prepared an Aide Memoire for DFAT following the completion of the mission.

Market Driven Irrigation Horticulture (MDIH) Land and Gender Activity

The Lesotho II Compact was an agreement between the US government-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Kingdom of Lesotho (GoL). It was a $US300 million programme to address binding constraints to economic growth in Lesotho. The Lesotho II compact consisted of three projects designed to combat constraints to economic growth by either strengthening private sector participation and/or by improving government coordination, capacity and execution.
