Ongoing Consulting Opportunity: Social Safeguards and Community Engagement Consultant

New consultancy opportunities and options for employment for a Social Safeguard and Community Engagement specialist. Services that engage in land governance and stakeholder engagement issues in infrastructure design and development are urgently required, and LEI is excited to be getting involved.

We are looking for an experienced social safeguards expert who can use their stakeholder and community engagement experience to improve land governance scenarios during infrastructure investment.  This opportunity will see you build solutions with LEI staff for improved land tenure results in the infrastructure sector, expand your networks and work across Africa, Asia and the Pacific with a range of clients. We are initially seeking a consultant role, with potential for more permanent employment arrangements.

This is a technical consulting role in which you will work alongside our experienced team of land professionals in new projects on infrastructure investment design. You will assist in identifying, managing and resolving the social safeguard impacts and risks related to infrastructure projects in collaboration with nationally based project teams. There will also be tasks requiring stakeholder mapping and community engagement strategy development.  You will work with institutions and people with different types and levels of expertise to complete comprehensive assessments that will inform the development of solutions that include flexible working arrangements, a mentoring approach and strong documentation and training skills. safeguards practice standards will be applied in all circumstances.

Your role will include:

Undertaking short term technical advisory work, and long-term oversight of international projects, managing quality deliverables and troubleshooting issues as a safeguards and community engagement specialist.

Providing technical and project management support to projects and Team Leaders in specific technical areas of:

  • Infrastructure project delivery, including broad stakeholder engagement.
  • Specific safeguards subject matter expertise (e.g., land, resettlement, disability etc) for  large scale infrastructure investment and climate change issues.
  • Establishing and monitoring context-specific engagement processes
  • Establishing and monitoring robust grievance redress mechanism(s) (GRM).

In addition to the technical aspects of the role, you may also be required to:

  • Support business development for project EOIs and tender preparation, and
  • Prepare technical papers, research, and presentations.

Please note that subject to the restrictions and conditions created by the Covid pandemic, the role is likely to involve domestic and international travel.

What we’re looking for

  • A motivated person with specific safeguards subject matter expertise and applied Environment and Social Framework standards experience.
  • Experience in the Pacific
  • Experience working with CSOs and communities and promotion of inclusive behaviour and practices.
  • Proven quality written work, as well as clear oral communication skills with various stakeholders.

Minimum qualifications and experience

  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in relevant field: Social Sciences, Public Policy, Law, Planning, or Geography
  • Five or more years’ international consulting in a related industry
  • One written reference
